“Hey… wanna hear the most annoying sound in the world?”

That classic line, repeated for a generation, helped stamp 1994’s Dumb & Dumber into classic American

comedy. The movie, though crude at the time, was the directorial debut of the Farrelly Brothers, and

has kept audiences laughing for years since.

The log line for the original film was “For Harry and Lloyd, every day is a no-brainer.” And after raking in

nearly $250 million in revenue – we ALL knew there was going to be a sequel. It was a “no-brainer.”

Unfortunately, that sequel was a prequel. 2003’s Dumb and Dumberer – When Harry Met Lloyd, failed

to connect with the new audience and the difference in revenues were staggering – only $35 million in

revenue.

So it was up to the Farrelly’s to rescue the situation, and bring back the original Harry and Lloyd (Jeff

Daniels and Jim Carrey). It took them nigh on twenty years to complete, but the finally delivered.

Or did they?

Some highlights of the first film:

-picking on the disabled/elderly

-journey to find a “lost” love

-road trip where they get turned around

-stuck in a case of mistaken identity

-bad guy gets killed

-large helping of crude humor

Now, highlights of Dumb and Dumber To:

-picking on the disabled

-journey to find a “lost” love

-road trip where they get turned around

-another case of mistaken identity

-bad guy gets killed

-extra large helping of crude humor

In the first film, it is easy to feel for the loveable losers; like they might do something to “totally redeem”

themselves, but in this iteration, Harry and Lloyd just seem beyond hope. They are too old, to idiotic –

to the point that they have only gotten MORE crude and pathetic. While Jeff Daniels and Jim Carrey

reprise their roles spot-on, their hijinks don’t resonate anymore. I came away wondering how much

better this movie *might* have been if this were made 10 years ago instead of Dumb and Dumberer.

In all, the escapades of Harry and Lloyd are funny – and predictable – will leave you laughing your ass off

while fighting back a tear. So if you want to hear the most annoying sound in the world – again – check

out Dumb and Dumber To.
